HAPPENING IN HISTORIC TOXAWAY

The Greystone Inn Changes Hands

The Transylvania Times,  September 17, 2024

A boutique real estate investment firm based in Vermont has aquired the historic 30-room Lake Toxaway property known as The Greystone Inn.

“We are delighted to add this exquisite hotel to our expanding collection of properties,” said Brandon Berger, owner and CEO of Wild Air Ventures in a news release. “Lake Toxaway is a true gem of a destination and we are excited to offer our guests a place where they can unwind, discover and experience unforgettable moments,” said Berger who grew up visiting The Greystone Inn with his family. With the vision of offering exceptional hospitality experiences in remarkable destinations, Berger co-founded Wild Air Ventures with his wife Daphne, the release said.

“This was an opportunity we couldn’t resist and is a perfect match for us as our company’s mission is to craft authentic and unforgettable experiences through beautiful spaces,” said Daphne. “The Greystone Inn provides a wonderful canvas to do just that, and an occasion to build upon its legacy with consistent strategic investments into the property.”

At closing Wild Air Ventures will transition management to Hay Creek Hotels and Restaurants, a leader in upscale, independent boutique hotel management while maintaining the hotel’s well-tenured associates, the release said. The company said it is planning a meaningful capital investment into the property, the details of which will be shared at a later date.

The Magic of Mountain Monarchs

Our State Magazine,  Autumn 2024

Brian Bockhahn carefully holds a monarch butterfly aloft outside the Gorges State Park Visitor Center. Here, at the edge of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, a view of low, rumpled hills stretches out for miles beyond. An audience of hundreds watches as Bockhahn gently affixes a tiny tag — a lettered and numbered polypropylene sticker — to one of the butterfly’s wings, decorated in brilliant patterns of orange, black, and white, like panes in a stained glass window.

A dozen kids surround Bockhahn, their hands held high. He places the fragile creature onto the fingertip of one lucky child. The butterfly pumps its wings once, twice — as if gathering itself — and then flutters away. “Good luck! Buena suerte!” Bockhahn shouts. The children wave goodbye as the colorful pilgrim turns south toward Mexico on one of Mother Nature’s most miraculous migratory journeys.

Treasures and Tickets

The Laurel Magazine,  August 2024

Thanks to the wonderful, fascinating, 2004 Ticket to Toxaway by Jan C. Plemmons – itself a major updating and revision of her 1984 original – readers can go back to Lake Toxaway’s first heyday when from 1903 until 1916 (when the dam impounding the lake failed disastrously), a 200-room hotel sat on its eastern shore. Guests enjoyed hiking, swimming, fishing and boating (gas and electric launches, sailboats, rowboats and canoes); horse and carriage rides on the vast property; a nine-hole golf course; a dance orchestra and of coursean array of lovely vittles.
